Getting Started
What is a QR code?
A QR (Quick Response) code is a two-dimensional barcode that can store information like URLs, text, contact details, WiFi credentials, and more. When scanned with a smartphone camera, the QR code instantly directs users to the encoded content. QR codes were invented in 1994 by Denso Wave and have become ubiquitous in marketing, payments, and information sharing.
How do I create a QR code with QR Geek?
Creating a QR code is simple: 1) Visit QR Geek and click 'Create QR Code', 2) Choose your QR code type (URL, text, WiFi, vCard, etc.), 3) Enter your content or destination URL, 4) Customize colors, add your logo, and select a style, 5) Download your QR code in PNG, SVG, or PDF format. No account is required for basic static QR codes!
Do I need an account to create QR codes?
No! You can create unlimited static QR codes without an account. However, creating a free account unlocks additional features like saving your QR codes, basic analytics, and the ability to create dynamic QR codes. Premium plans offer advanced analytics, team collaboration, and unlimited dynamic QR codes.
What types of QR codes can I create?
QR Geek supports all major QR code types: URL/Website links, Plain text, WiFi network credentials, vCard (digital business cards), Email addresses, Phone numbers, SMS messages, Calendar events, App store links, Social media profiles, and custom landing pages. Each type is optimized for its specific use case.
How do I scan a QR code?
Most modern smartphones can scan QR codes directly through the camera app - simply point your camera at the QR code and tap the notification that appears. For older devices, you may need to download a QR code scanner app from your app store. QR Geek's QR codes are compatible with all major QR code scanners.
Dynamic vs Static QR Codes
What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
Static QR codes encode data directly into the code - once created, the content cannot be changed. Dynamic QR codes contain a short redirect URL that points to your destination. This means you can change where the QR code leads without reprinting it. Dynamic QR codes also enable scan tracking and analytics.
When should I use a dynamic QR code?
Use dynamic QR codes when: 1) You might need to update the destination URL later, 2) You're printing QR codes on physical materials (business cards, flyers, packaging), 3) You want to track scan analytics, 4) You're running marketing campaigns and need flexibility, 5) You want to A/B test different landing pages.
Can I convert a static QR code to dynamic?
Unfortunately, static QR codes cannot be converted to dynamic after creation because the data is encoded directly in the QR pattern. However, you can create a new dynamic QR code with the same destination and replace the static one. We recommend starting with dynamic QR codes for anything that will be printed.
Do dynamic QR codes expire?
QR Geek's dynamic QR codes never expire as long as your account remains active. Unlike some competitors who limit redirect duration, your QR codes will continue working indefinitely. If you cancel your subscription, we provide a grace period to download your data and the codes will continue to redirect for 30 days.
Is there a limit to how many times a dynamic QR code can be scanned?
No! QR Geek places no limits on the number of scans for any QR code. Whether your QR code is scanned 10 times or 10 million times, it will continue to work and track analytics. Some competitors charge extra for high-traffic QR codes, but we believe in unlimited scans for all users.
Analytics & Tracking
What analytics do you track for QR code scans?
QR Geek tracks comprehensive scan data including: total scan count, unique vs repeat scans, geographic location (country, city), device type (iOS, Android, desktop), browser information, scan time and date patterns, and referral sources. All data is displayed in an easy-to-understand dashboard.
Is scan tracking GDPR compliant?
Yes! QR Geek is fully GDPR compliant. We don't collect personally identifiable information from scanners without consent. Location data is approximate (city-level) and based on IP geolocation, not GPS. Users can opt out of tracking, and we never sell scan data to third parties. See our Privacy Policy for details.
Can I export my analytics data?
Yes! Pro and Business plan users can export analytics data in CSV and PDF formats. This includes all scan history, geographic data, and device information. Export your data anytime for reporting, analysis, or backup purposes. API access is also available for Business plan users.
How real-time is the analytics tracking?
QR Geek provides real-time analytics. Scans typically appear in your dashboard within 1-2 seconds of occurring. This is perfect for monitoring live campaigns, events, or tracking the success of newly deployed QR codes. You can also set up notifications for scan milestones.
Can I see which of my QR codes perform best?
Absolutely! Your dashboard provides a comparison view showing all your QR codes ranked by performance metrics like total scans, unique visitors, and geographic reach. This helps you identify your most successful campaigns and learn what works best for your audience.
Customization & Design
Can I add my logo to a QR code?
Yes! QR Geek allows you to add your company logo or custom image to the center of your QR code. Our system automatically adjusts the QR code's error correction to ensure it remains scannable with your logo. We recommend using logos that are 20-30% of the QR code size for best results.
What colors can I use for my QR code?
You can fully customize foreground and background colors, plus corner and dot colors on premium plans. However, ensure good contrast for scannability - dark colors on light backgrounds work best. Avoid light foreground colors on light backgrounds or inverted color schemes, as these may cause scanning issues.
What QR code styles are available?
QR Geek offers multiple styles including: square (classic), rounded corners, dots, circular dots, and various corner styles. You can also customize the three corner squares and dots independently for a unique look. Preview your design in real-time before downloading.
What file formats can I download my QR code in?
QR Geek supports multiple formats: PNG (best for web and digital use), SVG (vector format for unlimited scaling), PDF (ideal for print), and EPS (for professional design software). SVG and PDF are perfect for large-format printing like billboards or banners.
What size should my QR code be for printing?
The minimum recommended size depends on scanning distance: For close scanning (business cards, packaging): minimum 2x2 cm (0.8x0.8 inches). For medium distance (posters, flyers): minimum 3x3 cm (1.2x1.2 inches). For far distance (billboards, banners): minimum 10x10 cm or larger. Always test your QR code at the intended viewing distance.

Security & Privacy
Are QR codes safe to scan?
QR codes themselves are safe - they simply encode data. However, malicious actors can create QR codes linking to phishing sites or malware. QR Geek protects users by: scanning all destination URLs for known threats, displaying a security warning for suspicious links, and providing branded landing pages that build trust with scanners.
Can I password-protect my QR codes?
Yes! Premium users can add password protection to their dynamic QR codes. When scanned, users must enter the correct password before being redirected. This is perfect for private content, exclusive offers, or restricted access areas.
How do you protect my data?
QR Geek uses industry-standard security measures including: SSL/TLS encryption for all data transmission, encrypted storage for sensitive data, regular security audits, ISO 27001 compliant infrastructure, and strict access controls. We never sell your data to third parties.
Can someone copy or clone my QR code?
QR codes can technically be copied like any image. However, with dynamic QR codes, you maintain control - you can change the destination, deactivate the code, or monitor for unusual activity. For high-security applications, consider adding password protection or using unique QR codes per recipient.
What happens if I delete my account?
If you delete your account, all your data including QR codes, analytics, and personal information will be permanently removed within 30 days. Dynamic QR codes will stop redirecting immediately. We recommend exporting your data before deletion. Deletion cannot be undone.

Enterprise plans include a 99.9% uptime SLA with guaranteed response times for support tickets. Our infrastructure is built on globally distributed servers with redundancy to ensure your QR codes are always available. Contact sales for SLA details.
Technical Questions
What is the maximum data capacity of a QR code?
QR codes can store up to 4,296 alphanumeric characters or 7,089 numeric characters. However, more data means a denser, harder-to-scan code. For URLs longer than ~100 characters, we recommend using a dynamic QR code with a short redirect URL for optimal scannability.
What is error correction in QR codes?
Error correction allows QR codes to be scanned even if partially damaged or obscured. QR Geek uses levels: L (7% recovery), M (15% recovery), Q (25% recovery), and H (30% recovery). Higher error correction is used when adding logos to ensure scannability.
Why won't my QR code scan?
Common scanning issues include: Poor contrast between foreground and background colors, QR code is too small for the scanning distance, logo is too large (covering more than 30%), poor lighting conditions, camera quality issues. Try increasing size, improving contrast, or reducing logo size.
Can QR codes work offline?
Static QR codes with text, WiFi credentials, or vCard data work offline - the data is encoded directly in the code. However, QR codes linking to URLs require an internet connection to load the destination. Dynamic QR codes always require internet to process the redirect.
What's the best way to share a QR code digitally?
For digital sharing (email, social media, messaging), download your QR code as PNG for general use or SVG for flexibility. Ensure the image is at least 200x200 pixels. Avoid excessive compression which can damage scannability. For websites, use SVG for crisp display at any size.
